Creating a Data Roadmap

Creating a Data Roadmap

Data is both the key to success and a constant thorn in the side of most organizations. It provides a wealth of information, and carries a huge burden to manage effectively. If your organization has a clearly defined data roadmap, we congratulate you. If you have thought about creating a data roadmap and then find ten other things that you would rather do, you’re not alone, and we are here to help.

Creating a data roadmap can seem daunting, but trust us, having a plan will help everyone sleep a little better. Here are a few steps to help any organization, big or small, create a data strategy:

  1. Examine the current state of operations. Take a hard look at how the organization operates, the needs of individual departments, company goals and current configurations.
  2. Develop an ideal state of operations. This step will require some research into best practices and a clear understanding of what an ideal data strategy would look like for your organization.
  3. Determine the difference between the current state and ideal state of operations. Once the gap analysis is completed, develop a strategy to move towards an ideal state of operations. This step requires some prioritization based on what’s realistic and obtainable.
  4. Consult with a data storage provider to discuss various needs for an individualized operation. Discuss various departments involved and how each department utilizes data and the need for accessibility. Depending on the industry, there will be regulations around data retention. Having a full understanding of how information flows through departments and what the company growth model looks like will help determine what data storage solution will best fit the needs of each, individualized organization.

After completing the important steps above, it’s time to develop a communication plan that is clear and concise. Remember, not everyone within a company speaks the same technical language, so it’s important to create an easy to digest data roadmap for all stakeholders to understand. This step will help ensure that there are no holes in the plan and that each stakeholder knows how data is handled as soon as it enters the organization.

Developing, implementing and communicating a data strategy is important to the health of any organization. It’s also important to understand that business goals will change, so a review of processes is necessary to keep an organization moving forward.
