It is impossible to have a conversation about data storage without discussing cyber-security, the two go hand-in-hand. If data security is vital to the overall data storage discussion, why do so many storage providers consider data security an afterthought?
The data storage landscape is changing. Solution providers should be experts in both data storage architecture and SECURITY. When evaluating a storage provider, consider these points:
- Work with a data storage company that looks at the whole data security picture. Internal security and storage security work together. If a hacker enters a network through a computer, they can easily gain access to storage and backup solutions.
- Data storage providers should encourage companies to be in control of encryption keys. Without having control of important encryption codes, companies do not actually have control over who can access the information, leaving valuable data vulnerable.
- Be careful of an out of the box, single storage solution (i.e., cloud solutions). Storage providers should recommend a hybrid approach to protect vital data. Replicating data to an onsite system and backing up to the cloud reduces the chance of data loss.
- Partner with a storage vendor that has an understanding of what it takes to fully recover data in the event of a breach, power outage or natural disaster. Storage providers should have a clear understanding of what it will take to recover data for complete business continuity.
As the amount of data continues to grow, more storage providers will appear on the scene to offer “cost saving” solutions. As tempting as it might be to implement a seemingly economical storage solution, no amount of cost savings will be a true savings if data is compromised or lost. If nothing else, make sure your data storage provider is well versed in security to protect one of most valuable assets an organization must secure—data.
