DSI Software: TapeManager, LibraryManager, Veritas, & BakBone

As a regular and critical administrative task, backups should be as automated as possible. Having administrators create, maintain, run, and track scripts to perform database backups adds managerial overhead expense (and reduces overall operating profitability) and introduces the possibility of error to critical business operations.

Using an enterprise backup and recovery software solution with robotic media handlers offers a completely automated archival operation for significant time savings. Hierarchical storage management software can automate archival tasks, maximizing free space for intensive network applications and allowing IT departments to concentrate on business-specific tasks.

TapeManager software is for use on Unisys MCP based systems only— it does not support Windows, UNIX, Linux, etc.

TapeManager Software

TapeManager from Dynamic Solutions International is designed to simplify your operations by tracking all of your tape and optical backup media. TapeManager works with all "cartridge" tape and optical technologies available on Unisys MCP-based ClearPath systems-DLT, 8mm, 4mm DAT, CD-R, MO, 36-track systems, among others.

TapeManager logs tapes real-time and tracks tapes stored both on-site and off-site. In recovering a database, TapeManager supplies tapes requested by DM Utility, removing any guesswork. Working with an automated tape library, TapeManager performs restores without any user intervention.

TapeManager also protects tapes from scratching or re-use. All commands are entered through the console like other system commands. There is no need to look up job or mix numbers. On-line help is available at the console.

Additionally, TapeManager includes a utility program that follows the standard MCP (MARC) presentation with menus and forms, aided by on-line help. TapeManager offers both short and long help on-line following the standard MCP implementation. A hyper-text-like capability allows users to request help for unknown items while in help mode by SPCFYing on the item.

TapeManager Features:

The TapeManager database is updated in real-time as cartridge activity occurs
Operator console (ODT) command and response (no AX or SM)
On-line help available at the operator console (ODT)
Customizable label printing interface
Multi-host support
Commands may also be input through MARC, DCKEYIN, batch and REMOTESPO
Selective cartridge tracking is based on pattern or number
Data protection is through PG and SN verification
Reports are provided either in hardcopy and/or through the operator console (ODT)
Extensive searching capabilities locate cartridges
Searches on strings can use "wildcards"
Customization of each site's requirements is provided
Logging and reporting of exception activity is standard
The command interface provides for quick and easy entry of all functions
No patches to MCP or other software

  TapeManager Requirements:

MCP 48.1 or later recommended for full feature-set
MT or ET equivalent terminal for utility program
      Active vs. Passive Mode:
The TapeManager system can operate in one of two modes: active or passive. Active mode is the default mode of operation. When configured for active mode operation, TapeManager is assigned to the MCP TAPEMANAGER interface via the SL command. This allows TapeManager to be called directly by the MCP for all tape actions.

Passive mode is used when another program (usually another tape management system) is assigned to the MCP TAPEMANAGER interface. In this situation, DSI's TapeManager acts as an interface to the LibraryManager system for the other tape management software.

The Install program will automatically determine if another program has been SLed as the active TAPEMANAGER and will install in passive mode.

VaultDR™ Application Plugin Module™ (APM)
The VaultDR APM provides the capability to create a block-by-block disaster recovery image of NetVault clients. There is no need to complicate your backup strategy with multiple products; NetVault’s VaultDR APM is an integrated solution capable of recovering the entire disk including the OS, applications, system settings, partition information, and data.

The VaultDR APM is easy to use. All operations can be managed from the central NetVault server. During the regularly scheduled period, an administrator will take the necessary client machine offline and boot it with VaultOS - NetVault’s disaster recovery operating system.

From the NetVault server, the administrator selects the disk and partition(s) to be backed up and creates the VaultDR image. In the event of a catastrophe or disk failure, administrators need only to boot the affected machine with VaultOS; it contains the necessary drivers required to re-establish network communication, and then recover the VaultDR image over the network. Simply restore the last full, incremental, or differential backup using NetVault and quickly and easily, you’re back online and ready to do business.

Application Plugin Module™ (APM) for Oracle
Information is the priceless asset of all organizations. Oracle environments are experiencing exponential growth as the importance of data and its uses has become a competitive edge for fast growing organizations. With the increasing size and number of Oracle databases comes the need for a reliable and easy to use solution to protect those assets. A database specific online backup and restoration solution is critical for keeping user data protected.

The Oracle Online Application Plugin Module (APM) for NetVault provides increased application availability via fast, online backup of Oracle databases in both UNIX and Windows NT environments. The APM includes a wide variety of important features such as hot backup, support for multiple database servers on a single machine, an easy to use graphical user interface, and support for raw table backup. With the NetVault Oracle Online APM, user databases remain online and fully accessible during backup operations, assuring zero downtime for users.

Application Plugin Module™ (APM) for MS Exchange
Electronic collaboration, such as e-mail, has become a central means of communication for many organizations. Microsoft's Exchange Server has been widely adopted as the premier groupware application. With the increasing number of e-mail to be archived, and the corresponding database growth, comes the need to protect this critical corporate information. It is essential for administrators to back up and restore an Exchange server with little or no impact on users.

The Microsoft Exchange Application Plugin Module (APM) for NetVault provides increased application availability via fast, online backup of Exchange databases in Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments.
